- Well, what's on the television then?
- Looks like a penguin.
Key features
The renowned comedy troupe attracts a committed crowd, well versed and passionate toward the material. It was clear to me that the design had to rely heavily on the things that make “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” what it is. The challenge here was to create an organized, clear design that is full of the chaos, humor, and non sequitur that are the trademark of the troupe, appealing both to die-hard fans and to people new to the material.
Wit
The show is known for its unique British humor, sharpened wit and nonsensically genius use of language - prominent in the sketches, the songs, and even the names of the episodes.
Series’s stills
As a dashboard for a TV series, my most valuable resource is the source material itself. Recognizable at a glance, the rich photographs from the episodes invoke a strong “click me” sensation.
Animated collage
The rich visual language of Terry Gilliam’s cut-out animations is a staple of the show. The animation sequences remain to this day my favorite aspect of the show and were the initial trigger for my infatuation with it.

And now for something completely different
It was important to me to begin the process from a place of rampant celebration of the material in order to eventually achieve a more fine and clear design that is still filled with the show’s DNA.
For example, my creative process began with the elements I was most drawn to in Monty Python - Terry Gilliam's drawings. The initial design heavily relied on the drawings, and I deliberately allowed myself to go overboard with the first steps of the design. However, in order to have a dashboard that is easy to use I had to refine and tone down, and eventually the drawings found their place as icons and background elements.

Dashboard
The dashboard contains many visual elements from the series itself yet it manages to remain easy to navigate and pleasant to view. A heavy emphasis is given to the ability to recognize and distinguish episodes.

Elements
My design adopts the key elements of the show into the necessary parts of the dashboard. The color scheme uses pink and light-blue, playful and unique. A cohesive, chaotic palette that embodies a clear visual language but doesn’t take itself too seriously.
The headings use a font with thick, round letters, lighthearted and playful. The menu options and more detailed information is presented in a smaller, more legible sans-serif font.
Infographics
Instantly recognizable objects from cult sketches were used to enhance the dashboard’s infographics.

Featured Episode
A common feature used in dashboards, some content is highlighted and made more noticeable. I created a new image to include the name of the episode and a standout image from the episode. My technique borrowed from the style of Terry Gilliam, made of separate cut-outs from the series and some of the same artwork sources that Gilliam used in his animations.

The Mobile
The accompanying app allows users to use the dashboard on mobile devices, and the design was adapted accordingly.
Approachable Overview and Data
An approachable array of infographics allows the user to easily observe viewing history and data. The data can be easily expanded by selecting the appropriate option and is presented in a fun and lighthearted manner.

Recommendations
This section allows the user to view friends' activities and recommendations and interact with them by viewing an episode together and sharing your likes and opinions. The user can easily and clearly scroll between friends, marked with names and photos.

My Watch List
An easy and clear option to scroll through the user’s watch list. Round corners make the design more approachable and lighthearted.

Fancy a Sketch?
Monty Python’s Flying Circus is a sketch show, and sometimes the user is looking for a particular sketch. This feature enables the user to filter and select individual sketches.
